The F clef

The bass clef began as a written letter F. Its two dots sit either side of the fourth line to mark the F below middle C, and every other note is counted from there: a step up is the G in the top space, a step down the E in the third.

Cello, double bass, bass guitar, bassoon, trombone, tuba, timpani and the lower voices read bass clef, and so does the piano’s left hand. Bass guitar and double bass sound an octave lower than they are written.

The other clefs: treble clef and alto clef.

Treble and bass clef together, as piano music is written, make the grand staff.
