The G clef
The treble clef began as a written letter G, and its curl still circles the second line to mark the G above middle C. Every other note is counted from there: a step up is the A in the second space, a step down the F in the first.
Violin, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, recorder, guitar and the higher voices read treble clef, and so does the piano’s right hand. Guitar and tenor voices sound an octave lower than they are written.
The other clefs: bass clef and alto clef.
Treble and bass clef together, as piano music is written, make the grand staff.
