Frequently asked questions
How do you build a chord on the piano?
Start on the root, then count half steps (each key, black or white, is one). A major chord is the root, 4 half steps up, then 3 more: C, E and G. A minor chord swaps those: 3 then 4, so C, E♭ and G.
What is the difference between major and minor chords?
Only the middle note. In a minor chord the third is one half step lower than in the major chord, which makes it sound darker. C major is C E G and C minor is C E♭ G.
What do 7, maj7 and m7 mean?
They add a fourth note, the seventh. C7 adds B♭ to C major and sounds bluesy, Cmaj7 adds B and sounds soft and jazzy, and Cm7 adds B♭ to C minor. Seventh chords are everywhere in R&B, lo-fi and jazz.
How do I find out what chord I am playing?
Tap the keys on the keyboard above. Once you have three or more, it names the chord, whatever order or octave the notes are in.
Which chords should a beginner learn first?
C, G, Am and F. Together they play thousands of pop songs (the I–V–vi–IV progression). Then learn the minor and seventh chords on the same roots.
Can I use these chords in a song?
Yes. Press "Make a beat" to open the editor with a beat in that chord's key, then add chords, a melody and your voice. No account is needed to start.
