Vocal range test
Your vocal range runs from the lowest note you can sing to the highest. Sing from low to high into your mic and this test shows yours, how wide it is and the voice type it fits, from bass to soprano.
The mic is on only during the test, and what it hears stays in this browser.
How to test your vocal range
Warm up
Hum or sing a few easy slides first. A cold voice reads lower at the top than it is.
Slide down, then up
Tap Start the test, allow the mic and sing an easy “ah”. Slide down to the lowest note you can hold, then up to the highest, holding each end for a moment.
Read your range
Tap Done. You get your lowest and highest notes, how far apart they are and the voice type your range fits best.
Voice types and their ranges
Six voice types, each about two octaves, overlapping their neighbours. Middle C is C4.
| Voice type | Range |
|---|---|
| Soprano | C4 to C6 |
| Mezzo-soprano | A3 to A5 |
| Alto | F3 to F5 |
| Tenor | C3 to C5 |
| Baritone | A2 to A4 |
| Bass | E2 to E4 |
What each type sounds like and sings is on the vocal ranges page.
Questions about vocal range
What is a vocal range?
The span from the lowest note you can sing to the highest, such as A2 to G4. It is counted on a piano’s note names, middle C being C4.
What is a normal vocal range?
Most people sing about an octave and a half without training, and trained singers two octaves or more. Each classical voice type is given about two octaves.
How does the test hear my notes?
It uses your microphone like a tuner: it reads the pitch you sing many times a second and keeps a note once you hold it for about a third of a second, so slides and cracks between notes don’t count.
Is my voice type the same as my range?
Not quite. Range is how far you reach; voice type is also where your voice sits most easily and how it sounds there. Two singers with the same range can be a tenor and a baritone.
Can I make my vocal range bigger?
Yes, by a few notes at each end with regular, relaxed practice: warm-ups, slides and scales, never pushing to strain. A voice teacher helps most.
Is the recording kept?
No. The mic is on only while the test runs, what it hears is read in your browser, and nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.
